The Strictly Modern rules use parity to determine the length of the refractory phase entered into by live cells:
Strictly Modern 1 - Eight neighbor parity, length of refractory phase is 1 for even parity and 2 for odd parity.
Strictly Modern 2 - Eight neighbor parity, length of refractory phase is 2 for even parity and 1 for odd parity.
Strictly Modern 3 - Four adjacent neighbor parity, length of refractory phase is 1 for even parity and 2 for odd parity.
Strictly Modern 4 - Four adjacent neighbor parity, length of refractory phase is 2 for even parity and 1 for odd parity.
Strictly Modern 5 - Four diagonal neighbor parity, length of refractory phase is 1 for even parity and 2 for odd parity.
Strictly Modern 6 - Four diagonal neighbor parity, length of refractory phase is 2 for even parity and 1 for odd parity.
Strictly Modern 7 - This is the four state rule 23b/, length of refractory phase is 2 regardless of parity.
Strictly Modern 8 - This is the four state rule 23bc/, length of refractory phase is 2 regardless of parity.
This lab allows experimentation with mixtures of Strictly Modern rules, where the mixtures are constructed by
applying the first rule a number of times followed by applying the second rule a number of times.
