Modern Cellular Automata

What's New On This Site

Modern CA Entrance

Forever Under Construction

This site will be under construction for as long as I continue to explore cellular automata. This page provides a convenient way to find out what has changed since your last visit.

February 2007

Added Hexagonal Life-Like Cellular Automata Rules exhibit.

Fixed rule neighbor count greater than nine bugs in the Hexagonal Rule Check Lab.

January 2007

Added Google SiteSearch support to the Map page.

Set the default speed limit to 75 generations per second in most exhibits. Exhibits with speed control still have a "fast" menu item which disables any speed limitation.

Experiments (multiple linked CA in a table) are broken when using the new Java. Changed Free CA Software Rule Evolution Experiment, Hexagonal Warp Effect, Brainsheets Rule Versus States Experiment, and Rule Transformation For Pattern Generation exhibits so that they no longer look broken. Reduced number of CA in Questioning ANKOS because the old number of CA was problematic with new Java and/or Internet Explorer software.

July 2003

Added Crop Circles: Rule 3/01234 from 11101. Added Benchmarking Brian's Brain, which contains vital news for Internet Explorer users interested in maximizing Java performance.

June 2003

Added hexagonal support and the Hexagonal Extension which consists of the following rule collections:

  • Hexagonal Brain Cellular Automata Rules
  • Fingerprints Hexagonal Cellular Automata Rules
  • George's Brain Hexagonal Cellular Automata Rules
  • Other Hexagonal Cellular Automata Rules

Added Modern Cellular Automata AuthorXY, a powerful new tool for comparing cellular automata in tables.

Added a site map and tweaked the site to make links and documentation easier to read.

Added Fractal Triangle Pattern rule standalone exhibit. Updated the Brain Variation Rule Mix Lab by adding the Strange Brain rule (2bc3ab4bc/, 3) to its list of rules. Added Brainsheets Exhibition, Brainsheets Rule Mix Lab, and June Odds And Ends, which contains the interesting Superfluidity cellular automata rule. Added standalone exhibits of LadderLife, a Life-like rule which when started with 131 live cells produces an infinite X. Added standalone Triplesheets exhibit. Added the Free CA Software Rule Evolution Experiment, mindless fun with text and rule mutation which you can also see instances of on the entrance. Added Questioning ANKOS, a new cellular automata art installation.

Updated the Modern Cellular Automata Java applet and provided a new software distribution of the applet, Author, and AuthorXY at author.zip.

    August 2002

Added the August Addition.which consists of the following exhibits:

  • August Addition Rules
  • Strictly Modern Rule Mix Lab, updated version
  • Brain 134 Rule Mix Lab.
  • Brain 3.5 Rule Mix Lab.
  • Brain 4.0 Rule Mix Lab.
  • Brain Variation Rule Mix Lab.

Added Rule Transformation For Pattern Generation and corresponding standalone exhibits: Strictly Modern 1 Patterns and Brain 134 Patterns.

Added Ice Nine 24 Hour Experiment and the rule 25678/5678 Iceball Formation Experiment.

Removed the link to the prototype Evolution Lab from the first page. The lab still works, but serious experimenters might want to consider using Author for evolution experiments.

    July 2002

    Added the Doppler Effect rule.

    June 2002

Added Modern Cellular Automata Author, a tool for creating web pages or experimenting in a general manner with rules and initial formations. Added author.zip, an archive containing the Modern Cellular Automata software distribution. This distribution includes both the applet and Modern CA Author. Documented the canonical rule format. Added improved documentation and a revision history to the Author software distribution. Added Strictly Modern Rules, a family of interesting four state (?) decay rules.

    May 2001

Improved slightly the interface to the evolution lab so that rules are captured to a second window. This allows many rules to be captured at once, and for rule text to be copied onto the clipboard. Added Simple Rule Lab, which lets one specify simple rules. Added a few more nice rules to Some Other Rules. Added Life Like Rules, Reversible Rules, Some Other Rules, and a Words page. Regrouped many of the examples into a new Traditional Rules section. Improved control features for many of the exhibits. Added site navigation tools.
